Pickering Traction Engine Rally Runs Out Of Steam

The town of Pickering is still wondering if the world famous traction engine rally has finally run out of steam as the rumour mill kicks in. Many of those working at this year’s traction engine rally and steam fair are claiming they have not been paid and are not expecting to be paid. This following what is believed to be the biggest ever traction engine rally in the UK and featured special guests Stavros Flatley.

Traction Engines At Pickering Traction Engine Rally

Stavros Flatley makes a guest appearance, on stage at Pickering Traction Engine Rally 2009.

According to reports, the organisers called for a meeting with the operators of the exhibits on Sunday, which ended with a heated row. Then many of the exhibit operators angrily blocked the exits and entrances to the show field.

Although we have no clear confirmation, it is believed by many in Pickering that the new organisers of the event: Events & Exhibitions Ltd have run into financial difficulty and are unable to pay agreed amounts to the exhibit operators.

I spoke with Arthur Harris of Events & Exhibitions Ltd, he told me he was stressed, but did not add anything else.

Police were called and arrived at the scene to make sure the dispute did not get out of control.

Pickering Flood Defence Experiment to Receive Funding

Environment Minister Huw Irranca-Davies said: "As climate change takes hold we are already seeing flood risk around the country changing, so it's important that we do all we can to protect ourselves and our communities."

"These projects will look at ways of doing just that in communities that don't have traditional flood defences, by changing the way that land is managed and trying things like creating wetlands and planting trees to hold water away from areas at risk of flooding."

Pickering Floods

The Pickering project aims to slow down the progress of flood water from upper catchment areas into rivers and watercourses in Pickering and Sinnington by planting trees and blocking moorland drains. Woodland planting can slow down water flows by improving soil structure, reducing erosion and improving water absorption.
Pickering has flooded four times in the last ten years during summer storms.

The project is a partnership between Forest Research (the research arm of the Forestry Commission), the Environment Agency, North York Moors National Park, Natural England and the Regional Flood Defence Committee. Defra is contributing £247,000 to the total £700,000 cost of the scheme.

Jeff Pacey, Ouse catchment project manager for the Environment Agency said:

"We will use information from this river catchment to see whether this type of approach will work in other locations across the country."
